China, growing up in a global family
My Lord,Mr President,Parliament,Government Official, Ladies and Gentlemen,
My warmest greeting to you on this very special occasion.
Shenzhen, a beautiful city in southern China, is where I come from. It is amazing in many ways. It is the preeminent high-tech hub of China, known for its well-developed market economy system and global reach. It is energetic and remarkably young, founded merely 36 years ago. The founding of Shenzhen, a special economic zone within China, marked the beginning the China’s reform movement, which resulted in a total transformation of China that we all witnessed in the past three decades.
It is my privilege to be invited to this esteemed event, the BURJ CEO Awards Ceremony, held in the beautiful city of London. I am honored and humbled at the same time to be a speaker.
The progress of nations and humankinds as a whole calls for the collaboration between nations and the joint effort of entrepreneurs across the globe. That way, we can effectively deal with, and find solution for many challenges that we are facing today, such as climate change issue, environmental pollution issue, and the overall health of global finance. Only through collaboration, we can find effective counter-balance to escalating social disparity, social immobility, social injustice, as well as ethnic and racial tension. Only through collaboration, we can empower people to take more control of their own destiny, benefitting from the common good of technological progress, and the shared resources in health care and education.
The world is in need of entrepreneurs for their creativity, the ever inquiring mind, the connective thinking, and above all the courage to act, and the drive to make it happen. Entrepreneurs are treasures to their countries and heroes to their people. The celebrity entrepreneurs and the popular brands they created are in fact the most effective vehicles of cultural exchange, and the bearers of national pride.
We learn about America through Apple, Microsoft and Google. We learn about UK through HSBC, Barclays and Shell. We learn about Japan through Toyota, Sony and Panasonic. Likewise, China, in its modern form, is re-introduced to the world through Huawei, Tencent and Alibaba. Brands do not just covey the functionalities of products; they also project the image of a nation and its underlying culture. Every well-known global company is a good business card for its motherland. My dear friends and fellow entrepreneurs, some of you have been to China, and some of you will soon to be there. Some of you know a lot about China, and some of you are learning about it. Regardless the level of prior acquaintance, we come to meet each other today as entrepreneurs in this global village. I hope this common name tag, “entrepreneur”, resonate with you as much it has resonated with me. By finding the resonating frequency of thought, we charter a common path for the future, a path to prosperity for all.
In the last three decades, China has undergone a remarkable transformation, with hundreds of million people coming out of poverty, GDP growing at a high rate and a new middle class expanding at a double-digit rate. The development in China also gives rise to new and interesting opportunities for the world. There was this young fellow who came to set up a business in China. To settle in, he bought a house in Shanghai. Several years later, when finishing his assignment, he sold the property at a ten-fold price. At his farewell, this is the very word he said, “China is just an AMAZING place!” This is certainly a small side story of one fortunate individual. It nevertheless manifests the tremendous energy and opportunities brought by the rapid growth of China.
Looking forward, China is entering the second phase of transformation, underscored by the reinvestment in technologies and the climb in the value chain. The world is going to witness a progressive China embracing the global order, effectively shouldering the allocated responsibility on the global stage, and being a constructive agent for global development. The proposition of “One-Belt-One-Road” and the founding of Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) together is a testimony to this new vision of China. This vision embodies new opportunities, new room to grow, and new ways of thinking and working together.
Talking about China, I have to bring up Guangdong Province, also known as Canton, in old English. In terms of the scale of economy, it has been the largest among provinces of China, for consecutive twenty eight years. It also managed to be the fastest growing one as well. If counting as an individual economy entity, Guangdong would have ranked 16th among G20. Its GDP in 2016 is eight trillion RMB, which is about 1.2 trillion US dollars. As China enters a new phase of economic development, Guangdong is leading the nation in the transition into the new norm.
Guangdong is known for its thrilling manufacturing sector, earning itself a nickname, “the factory for the world”. It is leading China in its industrial transformation hallmarked by three words, precision, intelligence and automation. Huangpu district of Guangzhou is a hub for CNC lathes and industrial robots. District of Songshan Lake in Dongguan is best known for its incubator for startup companies, specializing in robotics. In the nearby historical city of Shunde, it harbors Southern China Institute for Advanced Robotics Research. Between them, a highly competitive cluster has emerged. Guangdong is also known for its high-tech industries centered in the city of Shenzhen. Shenzhen is home to many leading companies of China: the global IT giant, Tencent, the global communication equipment giant, Huawai, the largest domestic producer of electric vehicles, BYD, the largest maker of touch screen, O-film, the leading domestic manufacturer of medical equipment, Mindray, the largest laser equipment company, Han’s Laser, and the largest unmanned drone maker, DJI, to name a few. As for the presence of global companies, total of 275 firms on the list of Global 500 set their global headquarter or regional headquarter in Shenzhen. From the standpoint of view of these global companies, Guangdong is no longer just a manufacturing site; it has gradually evolved into a center of innovation in its own right.
Guangdong Chamber of Commerce for High-Tech Industries was established twenty years ago, and is the first of its kind in China. Over two hundreds of its members are public traded companies in China or abroad. It serves as a platform for integrating resources along technology value chain. In the past two decades, we organized over 800 events including international conferences, exchange meetings, and over 100 forums. These events attracted over one hundred thousand attendees. The chamber has also established six investment funds and facilitated over 30 companies to go IPO in China or abroad. Over 100 of its member companies have cross-holding relationships, and thus forming a tightly knitted interest group.
As part of effort to promote exchange and collaboration between Guangdong high-tech industry and its global peers, I personally have leaded envoys to set foot in over 80 countries and regions. We have set up a center for international roadshow, and a panel for international investment. We have branch offices in Vietnam, Germany, Dubai and Australia. Our chamber has facilitated the collaboration between our member companies and their peers in US, Germany, Korea and Australia in high-growth areas of microelectronic, IT, advanced materials and renewable energy. These efforts have resulted in new trade over 8 billion and a direct investment of 1 billion in US dollars. We want to bring our people, our products, our technologies, our investments and our talents to the world. We also welcome you, my dear friends, to China, a land of deep culture known for its modesty and tolerance, and a land of many opportunities. I volunteer myself as your tour guide to see Guangdong and Shenzhen, bearing witness to its ongoing changes and feeling its vitality and excitement. Guangdong Chamber of Commerce for High-tech Industries is in your disposal, serving as one of primary gateways to China. We understand the tremendous value of connectivity and speed. Through our network and platform, we can help you make quick connection between projects and the right resources in service of your ultimate business objective. We want to be your friends and reliable business partners. We want to see more exchanges and communications at business level and personal level.
This is an era of shared fate. The world is so connected that none of us can live well in isolation. The global community will thrive as a whole when working together; conversely, its fate is doomed when every country is working in isolation and shying away for collective interest. Nowadays, a slowdown in one major economy can be quickly felt around globe in the time scale of months rather than years. Collaboration is the best way and probably the only way to face the challenges. I am paraphrasing what President Xi Jingping once famously said, “Golden opportunity arises from deep collaboration, underpinned by genuine respect and appreciation for each other.” If you have missed out China’s SILVER era of past thirty years, I am sure that you will not sit out the coming golden era of a new thirty.
My fellow entrepreneurs, as my speech draws to a conclusion, I have to say that I thoroughly enjoy the moment on this stage, sharing my thoughts with you and feeling the connection with you. I also have to say, using Romeo as my mouth piece, “Ay, so I fear, the more is my unrest.” Taking that advice, I am going to conclude my speech with a Chinese proverb: conquer with combined forces and prevail with combined wisdom.
May we all embrace this new era with dreams, confidence and joint efforts! May China perform well to a raised expectation on global stage, and bring delights to the world. Thank you all.
